How Wirral Credit Union started

Wirral Credit Union grew from a belief that local people should have fairer financial options closer to home.

We began in 1992 with Wirral Borough Council staff who wanted a simple way to save and borrow.

Then, in 1997, we opened our doors to the wider community.

Thousands of people have since joined to build their savings and borrow without the pressure of high-cost lenders.

Today, members include local employees saving through payroll and residents saving independently.

We’ve been supporting people with their money for over 30 years, and many of our members have been with us for decades.

That same community focus still guides how we work today.

What we do

Wirral Credit Union is a not-for-profit financial co-operative.

We exist because everyone deserves access to fair, affordable finance close to home. We look after people who live and work in a CH postcode through responsible lending and saving, and to keep money supporting local people and families.

All loans include savings built into the repayments, so while you’re paying off what you’ve borrowed, you’re also building a buffer for the future.

You can join if you live or work in our wider community, including through payroll schemes with your employer.
